WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Jam Press presents an exciting new opportunity for a freelance sub editor to pick up shifts on the news and lifestyle desk, with the possibility of regular weekly shifts.

The ideal candidate will be confident in their own abilities, have a strong news sense and will be able to make snap decisions on stories before these are passed on for final headlines and production.

This is a remote position, however, please note that our copy is written in British English, and you will need to be located in a similar time zone, as you’ll be working alongside our UK teams.

THE ROLE:

You will report to the news & lifestyle editor and production editor, with responsibilities including:

  • Keeping up with local and global events as well as keeping a pulse on social media trends
  • Supporting the news & lifestyle editor and senior reporters with moving stories through the production process
  • Editing and signing off stories for press, across news, lifestyle and features.
  • Upholding Jam Press’ house style and unique tone
  • Verifying information, ensuring the copy is legally sound and factually accurate, and flagging issues to editors as and when these arise
  • Providing a high quality of content by checking your own work before submitting the final copy
  • Working alongside the production team and reporters to ensure the article is packaged fully i.e. the appropriate imagery/footage has been requested
  • Participate in forward planning content, meetings and other team-focused tasks as and where required

ABOUT YOU:

  • Sub editing experience on a national paper, tabloid or news agency (women’s section a plus)
  • Experience editing human interest/real life features is also a plus
  • Ability to write sharp, digital-friendly headlines (final headline is done by the editor) and make use of the best pictures, video and other multimedia assets
  • A keen eye for detail and good organisational skills
  • Ability to edit copy to tight deadlines, working at a high speed without sacrificing quality
  • Skilled in prioritising stories accordingly depending on the day’s output, with guidance from editors
  • A team player with good communication and interpersonal skills, able to provide constructive feedback
  • High standard of written English
