Job: News Reporter

Jam Press is looking for journalists with a minimum of one year’s local/national newsroom or agency experience to join our News Team.

You will have excellent skills in finding and landing the stories that the press wants and understand how to appeal to different outlets – including national and digital publications, broadcast, magazines and print.

News reporters work across an exciting range of topics designed to entertain and inform the public, with stories sold and distributed through media companies, broadcast houses and publications in the UK and internationally.

Topics can vary greatly due to the nature of the role but cover areas such as current affairs, the hot topics of the day, breaking news, crime, showbiz, TV, sport and viral content.

Jam Press news reporters are required and encouraged to source as much of their own content as possible, though will also be assigned tasks and stories by editors, and work towards reaching the team’s monthly targets.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, great at multi-tasking and managing their workload, and able to prioritise the content that comes in throughout the day with the guidance of Editors. Basic media law knowledge is desired, but an excellent phone manner is a must, as is good communication skills.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Keeping up with local and global events as well as keeping a pulse on social media trends
  • Pitching, sourcing, and chasing stories on a daily basis, covering a wide variety of topics
  • Licensing content, verifying information, interviewing people
  • Planning, editing, and writing news articles, features and commercial content (Jam Prime)
  • Providing a high quality of content by checking their own work before submitting stories to editors
  • Creating and maintaining a network of contacts
  • Work closely with the news editor, taking on assigned tasks and flagging any issues with ongoing stories such as legal, general complaints or other concerns.
  • Sourcing photos as well as captions for all stories supplied, and requesting more imagery/video footage as and when required
  • Working alongside the production team on imagery and footage for stories
  • Pitch ideas for and participate in forward planning content, meetings and other team focused tasks.
